A new study finds obese people have 8 percent less brain tissue than normal-weight individuals. Their brains look 16 years older than the brains of lean individuals, researchers said today.
Those classified as overweight have 4 percent less brain tissue and their brains appear to have aged prematurely by 8 years.
A lot depends on what you want. You can be a thinker or a stinker. Some of us like me a Teddy are both but the run of the mill rank & file obese glutton is better off being a stinker.
The results, based on brain scans of 94 people in their 70s, represent “severe brain degeneration,” said Paul Thompson, senior author of the study and a UCLA professor of neurology.
“That’s a big loss of tissue and it depletes your cognitive reserves, putting you at much greater risk of Alzheimer’s and other diseases that attack the brain,” said Thompson. “But you can greatly reduce your risk for Alzheimer’s, if you can eat healthily and keep your weight under control.”
The findings are detailed in the online edition of the journal Human Brain Mapping.
Obesity packs many negative health effects, including increased risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and some cancers. It’s also been shown to reduce sexual activity.
More than 300 million worldwide are now classified as obese, according to the World Health Organization. Another billion are overweight. The main cause, experts say: bad diet, including an increased reliance on highly processed foods.
Obese people had lost brain tissue in the frontal and temporal lobes, areas of the brain critical for planning and memory, and in the anterior cingulate gyrus (attention and executive functions), hippocampus (long-term memory) and basal ganglia (movement), the researchers said in a statement today. Overweight people showed brain loss in the basal ganglia, the corona radiata, white matter comprised of axons, and the parietal lobe (sensory lobe).
“The brains of obese people looked 16 years older than the brains of those who were lean, and in overweight people looked 8 years older,” Thompson said.
Obesity is measured by body mass index (BMI), defined as the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters. A BMI over 25 is defined as overweight, and a BMI of over 30 as obese.
The research was funded by the National Institute on Aging, National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, National Center for Research Resources, and the American Heart Association.
Food is better than anything and most Americans agree. Why be smart when you can eat?

This is not a bad thing because with age comes maturity. Also, the brain is an energy hog and a smaller brain won't rob precious calories from our bodies.

I hear ya Ghetto Kid,
ReplyDeleteFat girls are not the sharpest cheddar but the sure do eat the cheddar and Velveeta cheese.
You are right GK when you are a true playa there ain't no muff too tuff.
When it comes to marrying ya gotta go with a skinny chick.
Fat chicks are gross! How do you guys get hard for them.
ReplyDeleteYo El, y'all gotta good question 'bout bangin' fat women.
ReplyDeleteI get mah African Trowser Snake hard by jus' lookin' at them, all they rolls an' rolls o' flesh, how they want it so bad, an' how it hypmotize they eyes when they lock eyes wit' it.
Man, just the sight o' them fine fly honies and they giant bodies gits me rarin' to go. It's like bangin' two, thee, o' fo' chicks at once!
Fattest chick I ever banged weighed over fo' hunnid pounds, but I'm lookin' to break past dat 500 pound mark, knawmean?
It's aight if you don't like bangin' fat chicks tho', that jus' leaves mo' fo' me an' ma man The Chef!!
OK, I really got to take issue with this topic.
ReplyDeleteSorry about that!
It implies that we fat people are less intelligent than thin people.
When I was 13, I scored 150 points on a standard IQ test. Being fat has not caused my brain to shrink, at least, not that I know of.
If I do have some brain damage, it was the result of getting my head bashed against the corner of a brick wall back in the 5th grade by a physical fitness and sports obsessed teacher, in an argument over an astronomy book that he would not allow me to check out from the school library.
The following year, that teacher was fired, and could not get another teaching job anywhere else.
I also suffered some brain damage as a result of being a breech birth when I was born. The doctor use forceps to deliver me, and I came out with the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck, and I was blue from lack of oxygen. The doctor didn't even have to hold me up and swat my butt to get me to breath, because I came into the world gasping for air, and my skin color eventually returned back to normal.
The doctor told my mother that I might be retarded as a result of possible brain damage, and suggested that I should be institutionalized.
But my mother didn't by that.
Yes, I was slow to develop in some areas, but she discovered that while I was playing with blocks I was good with letters and numbers, and had a fascination with symbols.
So, she tested me, and began teaching me the alphabet, and how to spell simple words.
Eventually, I learned how to read and write before I even started going to school, and by the time I was only in the 3rd grade, I could already read at high school and adult level, and science was my favorite subject, especially astronomy.
Then I read about Galileo, and the Inquisition, and learned at an early age that religion was bullshit, and I rejected all the myths and bullshit that my Sunday school teachers tried to indoctrinate me with, from the BUY-BULL!
During the summer months when school was out, I would go to the public library and check out astronomy books from THE ADULT SECTION of the public library.
This was when I was only in the 4th grade.
So, despite having some brain damage from birth, and further brain damage when I got my head bashed up against a brick wall when I was in the 5th grade, I managed to score 150 points on a standard IQ test when I was 13 years old.
To be continued . . . . .
. . . continued from above:
ReplyDeleteI was about 11 years old, in the 5th grade during the head bashing incident.
I remember when I was about 12 years old, when my appetite started raging out of control, and I was 13 years old when I started gaining a lot of weight, and getting fat.
So, I had suffered some possible brain damage BEFORE I started getting fat.
Therefore, it's not being fat that causes brain damage or shrinkage, but rather, the opposite way around, that is, it was possibly some brain damage beforehand that lead to my obesity.
Also, I do have some difficulty controlling my emotions when I'm in any stressful situation, and in recent years I have been seeing a therapist and have been diagnosed with PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which was the result of the abuse I had been through.
Not to mention, having been beaten and raped by an older man when I was 17 years old didn't help matters much either.
So, these so-called experts really don't know what the fucking Hell they're talking about. They're just talking out of their asses!
Also, I have noticed that a lot of these super skinny Hollywood fashion models in their size zero outfits are all bubble-headed bimbos with the IQ of a steam iron.
In a recent Miss America pageant, some of the contestants were asked questions of what they thought about Evolution and whether or not they believed that Creationism should be taught along side Evolution in high school science classes.
You should have heard some of the stupid moronic answers most of the contestants gave in response. They didn't know what the fuck they were talking about. It was fucking pathetic!!! Which of course, says something about the declining quality of education in American schools.
I say, NO, absolutely NO, that Creationism should not be taught in a science class, because creationism is NOT science. It's just some more of their right-wing Christard Funny-mentalist bullshit from the BUY-BULL!!!
So, I have given some perfect examples of how being thin does not make one smarter than fat people.
But then, what can you expect from anorexic bimbos subsisting on nothing but lettuce leaves and tofu???
COME ON YOU BRAIN-DEAD BIMBOS! EAT SOME OILY BAKED FISH! OK???
That's some excellent brain-food because of the Omega 3 fatty acids which is good for the brain and the heart.
And while you're all at it, eat some pie and . . .
SHUT THE FUCK UP!
In response to Anonymous (or is that, any mouse?)
ReplyDeleteWell, I know from past experience that for the most part in makes no difference how fat or thin one is.
But I can give some examples here:
When I was going to school, I noticed that many of the fat kids in my class were averaging higher grades. Probably because they were more interested in their studies than they were in PE.
The smartest history teacher I had in school, he was very fat, probably well over 400 pounds. He was kind of pear-shaped.
I remember in my English literature class reading a story titled The Laziest Man In The World. Oddly enough, it was about Benjamin Franklin, one of our founding fathers who was, as we all know, a great inventor, and in this story I read, he called himself the laziest man in the world, which was why he invented so many things to make life easier.
By the way, Benjamin Franklin was fat and bald. Yet, he was a real ladies' man. Yeah! A real mean sex machine.
Also, malnutrition in very young children can impair brain development, and these women who go on weight loss diets while pregnant run a greater risk of giving birth to infants with poorly developed brains.
And these skinny anorexic bimbo are hardly what I would call intelligent.
I give another example:
One day, while I was sitting in a restaurant, at an adjacent table were these three bubble-headed anorexic looking bimbos. Each one eating a salad that consisted of a lettuce leaf, and a couple slices of cucumbers and no tomatoes, and a glass of water. That was it!
And their highly intellectual conversation was all about jogging, their favorite brand of running shoe, like Nike or Reebach. Ho hum!
All they care about is fashion or the latest diet craze.
Sorry JIMBO!
But I know from past experience that some of the dumbest broads I have ever known were super skinny anorexic bimbos.
I think of them as human poodles!
Teddy my fine fat friend,
ReplyDeleteI would sacrifice a few brain cells for food. I have to believe the science on this one and I want to put a positive spin on it.
I think about MeMe Roth and how she mops the floor with the FA girls. MeMe is smart as hell.
I have to agree about the ana chicks but they actually have a real disorder. They don't choose to be skinny and starve.
Gluttony trumps brain cells any day. Sure, I probably could have been a rocket scientist but for me it wasn't worth it. Food is just that damn good.
Food trumps EVERYTHING!
Good evening Fat Bastard:
ReplyDeleteSorry, but I still have to take issue with this topic.
I wish I had been allowed to complete my education so that I could have been able to pursue a career in science.
I would not be living in poverty right now, and would be making a lot more money.
True, a physics professor or an astronomy professor in a university or in some other field of science does not make nearly as money as a professional football player, or a dope dealer, or a Republican, or a NAMBLA pedophile or a right-wing Christard Funny-mentalist television evangelist, or some other low-life scum like that.
But I would have more money than I have now, and I could afford better health care, and afford much better food. It would still be much better than living in poverty getting a lousy $650 dollar per month disability pension, which the Republicans would like to take away from me so the I would die out in the streets.
And sorry again, but Me Me Roth is a fascist bigot. She hates fat people, and she is not all that smart. People who harbor prejudice are of lower intelligence, like the redneck in the KKK or something like that. They don't know what the fuck they're talking about.
People like Me Me Roth, they do not care if fat kids get bullied around in our schools.
She's probably a two-bit whore who spreads her legs apart for all the professional athletes.
She my sound smart when she speaks, but she really does not know what the fucking Hell shes talking about, because she speak from a position of prejudice, and like a television evangelist, she is a liar by the town clock!
Just like these religious television evangelist getting rich telling lies and fairy tales about a man made from a lump of dirt, a woman made from his rib, that they were placed in a magic garden with a magic tree with magical fruit they weren't suppose to eat, and being tempted into doing so by a talking snake with legs! Yeah! Now that all make perfect sense!
So, we have people out there getting rich telling lies and fairy tales to all the moronic sheep that like to follow them.
Yes, I'm a glutton and I love to eat.
But I also have a very hungry mind as well, and I like to read, and watch educational videos on science, like astronomy, biology, paleontology, and Evolution, etc. etc.
So, in addition to feeding my belly, I also like to feed my head.
Please do check out the Playlists on my new YouTube channel.

I have been very busy adding more and more Playlists.
OK! UPDATE!
ReplyDeleteWhen I clicked on the web site links provided in this article I get the following . . .
404 Error
The page you're looking for isn't here.
So, we really have nothing to go on.
OK, now I will go along with the following.
"The main cause, experts say: bad diet, including an increased reliance on highly processed foods."
Making bad food choices is the main problem, whether you're fat or thin.
I make sure to get plenty of vegetable and fresh fruit every day.
I don't eat nothing but crap, so I would say, making bad food choices has more of an effect on the brain than just being fat.
A fat person who make healthier food choices, and avoids too many crappy junk foods is far better off than a thin person who eats nothing but crap!
So, that is another factor that must be taken into consideration.
OK?
Teddy, I tried to take issue with it too but I couldn't. I simply looked at the bright side of it.
ReplyDeleteHere is a link saying the same thing.
http://www.caller.com/news/2010/oct/20/obesity-makes-brain-smaller-older/
http://www.longevityleague.com/obesity-may-lead-to-a-smaller-brain/
http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20327222.400-expanding-waistlines-may-cause-shrinking-brains.html
The evidence is overwhelming and we may not like it but I want to put the best spin on it.
For me food beats IQ and Brain matter any day. I also think that most fat people feel the same way. These article are not going to stop the obesity bloom. FOOD WINS AGAIN! OINK OINK OINK!
Teddy, you and I are two very different types of gluttons. I am a hedonistic glutton and you are more of an Epicurian style glutton. You will delay your pleasure whereas I what immediate gratification and while you are an admirable glutton I am a classic glutton. I would say that you are a pseudo glutton and I am the classic glutton. You eat vegetable and as you know my position... vegetables are what food eats. You are the gentle Black bear while I am the aggressive grizzly bear.
ReplyDeleteYou are a thinker and I am a stinker.
Good morning Fat Bastard:
ReplyDeleteI read the article.
It's not just being fat that's the culprit, but rather, where the fat is located and what kind of fat.
In many previous articles that I have put up on my own blog, I have posted links to articles that pointed out the difference between visceral fat and subcutaneous fat, and the difference between being pear-shaped and apple-shaped.
That seems to be the theme of my blog, because I always like to put up my art work depicting guys who are apple-shaped in the extreme, their arms bigger around than their legs and hips, going prematurely bald on top of their heads in their teenage years, being diabetic, and only living into their late 20s or early 30s and dying of their second or third heart attack, while depicting pear-shaped obese males as living into their late 60s and beyond.
The problem seems to be related to, not just the belly fat, but mostly the visceral fat that accumulates under the muscle wall of the abdomen and collecting around the internal organs.
The subcutaneous fat that collects just under the skin, the kind of fat that usually goes to the butt, hips, and thighs, is relativity harmless compared to visceral fat.
Also, it's not just having a fat belly, but what kind of fat you have on your belly.
If your belly is all soft, flabby, and jiggly, then that is due to the harmless subcutaneous fat outside the muscle wall of the abdomen, and just under the skin.
But if your big belly is kind of firm and solid, then that means there is a lot of visceral fat under the muscle wall of the abdomen which collects around the internal organs, and therein lies the problem.
It's possibly to have both subcutaneous and visceral fat in the belly area.
So, we've been down this path before.
I can also point out to articles that say, if you're obese, but you happen to be pear-shaped, with fat mostly on the lower-body, the butt, hips, and thighs, then you really don't have that much to worry about. I have also posted links to articles that say fat people who are pear-shaped tend to score higher on standard IQ tests than those who are apple-shaped.
And in one of your previous articles, we had mentioned that obese women in the south tend to be more apple-shaped while obese women up north tend to be pear-shaped. Yeah, I have noticed that here in El Paso Texas where I live. I have seen a lot of obese apple-shaped women, and perhaps, it's just my imagination, but they do seem to be as dumb as a box of hammers compared to obese pear-shaped women, and of course, being in Texas, one does see a lot of obese apple-shaped guys going around with their pants sliding half-way down on their butts.
Of course, I need to point out, that in these articles to which I had posted links, that the differences in IQ scores is only about 3 to 5 percent.
But still, it's as I have said before . . .
Fat Ass = Smart Ass!
Once again you bring your keen scientific slant to it. Your unmatched knowledge of fat somatotypes pretty much complete the picture.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct about the fat apples in the South especially the women. So much for the term wise apple.
In so so so many ways the pears have it and for the life of me I don't know why you want to be an apple. I have come to love my apple status because I have the apple personality.
As you know Teddy we at Bigger Fatter Blog consider you a doctor of all things fat. AKA Gerald Teddy Bear PhD so I would like your opinion on the work of William Herbert Sheldon and I would love reading a paper by you on how you have expanded his work. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somatotype_and_constitutional_psychology
For our readers nor familiar with Sheldon's work.
Sheldon's "somatotypes" and their supposed associated physical traits can be summarized as follows:
Ectomorphic: characterized by long and thin muscles/limbs and low fat storage; usually referred to as slim. Ectomorphs are not predisposed to store fat or build muscle.
Mesomorphic: characterized by medium bones, solid torso, low fat levels, wide shoulders with a narrow waist; usually referred to as muscular. Mesomorphs are predisposed to build muscle but not store fat.
Endomorphic: characterized by increased fat storage, a wide waist and a large bone structure, usually referred to as fat. Endomorphs are predisposed to storing fat.
Roughly the three corresponding personality types proposed by Sheldon are somewhat akin to Jung's categorization of thinking, feeling and sensing types. As such they correspond quite closely to popular stereotypes of the skinny nerd, the jolly fat man, the slow-witted tough guy.
To our readers: Dr Bear is currently the only fat studies scientist expanding on and advancing Sheldon's work. Let's hope that Dr Bear finds the time to write another one of his block buster reports on somatotypes.
Are you still going to blog on this blog? I thought you were leaving google? What is the address of your new blog? can't miss out on my daily dose of biggerfatterblog ☮
ReplyDeleteBiggerFatterBlog is also on Word Press. I prefer the Google platform becasue the comments section is better but I don't like their censorship
ReplyDeleteAlso try www.BiggerFatterPolitics.blogspot.com It is like Bigger Fatter Blog but because it is political speech Google says they won't censor it. If they do the ACLU will file suit against them and old Fat Bastard will be rich! OINK!
Yo yo yo!
ReplyDeleteI just wanna tell y'all that I love bangin' both apple shaped women, an' pear shaped women. Even orange shaped women, dat's one dat's round all over, gots them curves in all they right places.
